Carnegie Mellon is set to offer the first undergrad AI degree in the US
Details: Students will study the ethical and societal implications of AI with professors from other departments, like social sciences and public policy. They will also have opportunities for independent study in using AI for social good (like improving transportation, health care, or education). Other courses will cover areas like statistics and probability, computational modeling, machine learning, and symbolic computation.
Pipeline: There are a lot more companies looking for AI talent than there are experts to help them. An undergraduate degree might not be enough to build the most cutting-edge AI systems, but plenty of firms need employees who know their way around machine-learning algorithms.
Why it matters: You can’t be a computer scientist these days and not have some degree of AI in your skill set. And CMU’s focus on ethics will help train the next generation of developers to make sure more systems are built with people in mind. [Via]
World’s thinnest hologram paves path to new 3-D world
A pioneering team led by RMIT University’s Distinguished Professor Min Gu has designed a nano-hologram that is simple to make, can be seen without 3D goggles and is 1000 times thinner than a human hair.“Integrating holography into everyday electronics would make screen size irrelevant — a pop-up 3D hologram can display a wealth of data that doesn’t neatly fit on a phone or watch. Netflix Stethoscope - a new "User Focused Security" open source web application
A new web application has just been announced by Netflix, quite unusual I must admit, that collects information for user's devices and provide recommendation on how they can be more secure. It can also provide notifications on unauthorized access of your devices and the best part of it is that its open source.
Here is part of the announcement:
Netflix is pleased to announce the open source release of Stethoscope, our first project following a User Focused Security approach.
The notion of “User Focused Security” acknowledges that attacks against corporate users (e.g., phishing, malware) are the primary mechanism leading to security incidents and data breaches, and it’s one of the core principles driving our approach to corporate information security. It’s also reflective of our philosophy that tools are only effective when they consider the true context of people’s work.
Stethoscope is a web application that collects information for a given user’s devices and gives them clear and specific recommendations for securing their systems.
If we provide employees with focused, actionable information and low-friction tools, we believe they can get their devices into a more secure state without heavy-handed policy enforcement.
How to Communicate your blog posts wide and properly
- Google+ the post – make sure you share your content across Google+. It’s great for SEO and if you have a strong community on Google+ they can get notified that your post is live.
- Pinterest – share your featured image to a board
- Schedule 10 tweets over a period of a week. Twitter is a hungry beast and you need to feed it. Don’t be afraid of over sharing on Twitter – it takes a LOT of posts to over share anything on Twitter.
- Share to appropriate Facebook Groups – FB groups are a very under used feature and having an active strategy for groups can be hugely beneficial.
- Share your blog to all your LinkedIn groups – And, not just once. Share your blog post across your groups multiple times over a period of a few months. We’ve found great success in sharing three, four or five times to groups.
- Share to Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon – These sites are hungry for content, free to use and have a massive active community just waiting to read your post.
- Share to BizSugar – created for businesses and also free and waiting for your content.
- Share it to Flipboard – I love Flipboard, I read content on this platform every day. Create a magazine to hold all your content and make sure you’re copying your content to it.
- Make sure your post is optimised to Google AMP – The AMP Project was set up to make sure that content is stripped of all unnecessary content and optimised for fast, mobile use. Many blog sites are overloaded with additional HTML code which slow down the experience so outputting your content using the AMP standard means that Google will prioritise your content and serve it faster to your audience. While you’re at it, you should also try and get your blog post approved on Facebook for their similar Articles feed.
- Share the post to Medium – Another popular site that’s free to use and waiting for your content.

New Camera Can See Around Corners
The technique is similar to that used with other single pixel cameras. The trick is to first randomize the light that the pixel detects, record the resulting light intensity, and then repeat this process thousands of times.
It’s easy to think that this randomization makes the task of creating an image even harder, but the reverse is true.
The randomization process changes the intensity of light each time the pixel records it. These differences in intensity are not random but instead correlated with the scene in front of the pixel. So producing an image is simply a question of mining this data to find the correlation. And the more data that is collected, the better the image becomes.
So by recording the intensity of light many times, it is possible to create a high-resolution picture with a single pixel.
